How to Decide Which Tasks to Outsource for Your Small Business

Business Tips

March 7, 2023

Now that you’ve decided you’re going to outsource tasks in your business, the question becomes WHAT are you going to outsource. There’s truly someone out there to help with everything – accounting, blogging, social media, cleaning, laundry. Whatever you need, trust me… it exists. And it can feel overwhelming if you aren’t sure where to start. Choosing what to outsource comes down to one thing: what can you trust someone who isn’t you to do for (or in) your business? Today, we’re going to talk about one easy way to decide which tasks to outsource in your small business.

How to decide which tasks to outsource as the CEO of your small business to get time back and improve your life in the office

Decide what only you can do!

My biggest advice when deciding what to outsource is to first determine what only YOU can do. Make a list of all the tasks in your business. No, seriously. Every single one. Write down what you do each day, what you do each week, and each quarter. Once that’s done, you can start breaking those tasks into two categories. The first category is what only you can do. For most business owners, these are tasks that are very forward facing or have your voice, being, or body attached to. If you’re a photographer, this is probably your photography sessions. An educator needs to be doing their content (i.e. YouTube or podcast recording). Obviously those are just examples, but hopefully it makes sense. Anything that only YOU can do, cross off the list (for obvious reasons).

What’s left is what you can outsource…

The rest of the tasks on your list are the starting point of what can be outsourced. I’m not saying you have to outsource everything that’s left, but now you can look through those and decide where you want to start. Finding the right team member can feel daunting, but once you know what kind of experience you’re looking for, it will get much easier.

This simple trick may sound too good to be true, but I truly believe it’s the best way to determine what you can let go of first in your business. Questions about outsourcing? Don’t be afraid to ask! I’ve been doing this for almost 7 years and I love helping other business owners learn to let go and find more freedom.
