Hiring My First Team Members | A Look Inside my First Year with Contractors

Business Tips

February 28, 2022

2021 was a crazy year for me as a business owner. Like so many entrepreneurs, I had no idea what this year would hold for me. I was mostly just thankful to have made it through the first part of the pandemic unscathed. But, as the year began, I knew I was going to need help to keep up with the demand of work – which was an incredible blessing (and still is). Early in the year, I was presented with opportunities to hire contractors to help me! So I did. And it’s been AMAZING. As someone who never thought I would be in this spot, I thought it would be fun to talk about what it’s been like to work with contractors and team members for the first time!

Who are my team members?

This past year, I hired three team members to help me with day-to-day work.

Brittany is my sister-in-law and my lead content writer. She’s been an incredible asset to the business this year – and saved my sanity more times than I can count. For the longest time, I’ve run this business alone. So having someone to lean on, share work with, and rely on has been amazing. She is so talented and all of our clients absolutely love her, her writing, and her hard work. Oh, and her graphics! Not only does she help me with client writing, she also manages my Pinterest account (and several clients’, too!) and other miscellaneous design work for Dot the I’s Outsourcing. I’m so excited for her role to expand in 2022!

My mom, Joan, is my second team member. She’s been such a huge help this year. I trained her to help prepare images for blogs, so she’s our Blogstomp expert! She combs through the beautiful galleries clients send us for blogs, curating the images and preparing them for the blog. It’s been a huge time saver and we love being able to use her eye and perspective to tell the best stories possible for our clients.

Last (but not least!), is our team admin, Amanda. The newest hire, she’s already made her place on the team. We’re so happy to have someone help us on the backend of the business. Between gathering analytics, helping prepare emails, and ensuring our team has what they need to work, she’s proven invaluable. We’re so happy to have her! This is our newest position and still evolving, but we know we need this incredible lady on our team!

What it’s been like…

When I began to work with these three women, I was anxious. I had never had anyone else to share the workload with and honestly, the one time I did try… it didn’t end well. But, when you find the right team members, everything changes. And that’s exactly what happened. I’ve never had to sweat about if they’re going to do their jobs. All three go above and beyond for me and our clients every single day. And honestly, it’s addicting to hand things over! Getting your time back, while still serving your clients, because of a great team is the best feeling in the whole world!

I won’t lie, handing off work for the first bit felt SO anxiety ridden. I checked everything twice, I made sure it was done to my standards. And I was always pleasantly surprised. Now, we work like a well-oiled machine and I am able to completely let go of what I asked them to do. That’s what happens when you’ve got a great team around you. The fear disappears and is replaced with relief, and excitement. I just want to say thank you to my incredible team! You make everything possible.
