What Should I Blog About? | Three Topic Categories to Plan Content

Business Tips

September 6, 2021

One of the top questions I get when I chat on the phone with a potential new client about blogging is: what on earth am I going to share about? I have all my clients build a blog schedule so that we can plan out their content in advance, but I know that it can feel daunting to come up with topics each week. That’s why I thought it might be helpful to break down three big categories of topics you can blog about today. So open up that blog schedule and let’s get going!

What Should I Blog About? Three topic categories to plan content for shared by content writer Kristina Dowler of Dot the I's Outsourcing

Your sessions and/or weddings (AKA: What You Do)

If you’re a photographer, this one seems kind of obvious, right? Blog the work you’re doing. Honestly, this idea applies to any business: rentals, bakeries, teachers. Seriously. Share what you’re doing. The next question naturally becomes, “do I have to share everything?” and frankly, the answer is up to you! I encourage my photographers to share all of their sessions and weddings, because people matter more than profit (in my opinion) and I want all clients to have a stellar experience. Remember, you control what gets shared – so think about being selective with your images and you’ll find you can make any session or event fit in your brand. When you start on your blog schedule, fill these events in first. See what kind of gaps you have after that and think about using one of the next categories to round your schedule out!

Frequently Asked Questions (AKA: Client Education)

When I say “education” as a topic, a lot of business owners run for the hills. I get it: not everyone wants to become a coach or educator. But I don’t mean business education. I’m referring to client education. Think about the questions that your clients ask you about A LOT and consider writing a blog post about it. Then, the next time you’re asked, you can send them to your post (which helps with website traffic!!) and still serve them well. In fact, I’d argue it looks more professional than a mile long email response. And it will save you time!

Behind the Scenes (AKA: Introduce You!)

The final category to think about using on your blog schedule is behind the scenes or personal posts. You don’t have to pour out your whole soul to the internet. Trust me. But, sometimes just sharing a glimpse inside working with you can be enough. Can you share an office tour? What about a look at the albums you offer? You can share parts of you and your experience without having to bare your whole life to the world. Think about ways to show off what you do and mix that into your schedule!

When you think about your blog in the lens of these three categories, it becomes super easy to fill out your blog and show up regularly. Remember, blog with purpose – not just for the sake of blogging, and think about how your audience and clients will find use in the content you’re posting. Once you’re thinking in that way, you’ll be on the road to a bountiful blog in no time!
