Why Newborn Portraits Matter to Me

Personal

February 9, 2018

Disclaimer! I’m writing this post just under two weeks before I get to meet my little guy and I don’t know if I’ll get to edit it once he does before I post, so bear with me through the sappy last few weeks of pregnancy hormones! 🙂

When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately told Ryan I knew I would want two things: a maternity session that he would have to be involved in and a newborn session. While he understood I couldn’t take my own maternity portraits, he was a little perplexed at why I couldn’t photograph our little guy – and frankly, so were a few other people I talked to. After explaining to them how much training and set up goes into a newborn session, I think they began to understand why a professional newborn photographer and session was so important to me. It wasn’t just about the safety of our little guy or how tired I’d be trying to capture these images – it was about so much more. So I thought I’d share today why I think newborn portraits are ALWAYS worth the investment!

He’ll never be that little again. I know, duh, right? But seriously. My nephew grew so much in the first few weeks – let alone months – and I’m so thankful I was able to capture those early days for my in laws. I can’t NOT imagine having good quality images of our sweet bundle of joy when he’s the tiniest thing we know. He is going to grow up big and strong and time flies really quickly. I never ever want to forget how he looked just days after coming into the world – the tiny toes and fingers and how curled up he still was. (see, there I go being all emotional….). These images are going to preserve our tiny guy forever.
Like I just said a million times – he will grow SO fast. And let’s be totally honest, we’re new parents. We’re going to be exhausted. And while I have no doubt that despite my sleepless nights that I will take a billion and a half pictures of our little guy, they won’t be perfect. They won’t be well lit or of his tiny feet and hands. They’ll be of us with him – which is still SO SO worth capturing, please don’t misunderstand! But there’s something amazing about those first few days and having a professional capture those early moments because….
A professional means GOOD quality images that can be shared, printed, and preserved forever. While I know I’ll love our cell phone images and the ones everyone else takes for us, good quality images from a professional guarantees they will be beautifully preserved for years to come. It means we’ll have something of quality to hold onto even when he leaves our home. It means that we’ll always have something special to look at to remember the journey we’ve been on. This is such a special time in our lives and I can’t imagine NOT documenting it.

The short of it is (too late?) that he’ll never be this little again and every amazing journey like this should be documented – particularly by a professional so that we have good quality images to remember the start of this amazing life forever. And to me? That’s enough.

Did you have newborn portraits done? Do you wish you had? Tell me your thoughts! I’d love to hear them!! I can’t wait to share the rest of our portraits on the blog soon!

xoxo
