One of the common concerns about blogging that I hear from business owners is that they’re afraid to start and run out of things to talk about. Many are also often concerned about what they’ll post during their “slow” season in the winter, when they’re not actively photographing sessions or weddings at the same frequency. Today, I wanted to share some ideas of what you can blog during your slow season as a photographer! Trust me, there’s still plenty of useful content for you and your ideal audience.
Share sessions you didn’t yet!
Most photographers find that they do wind up with content they photographed but haven’t blogged by the time the slower season rolls around. This could be mini sessions, a styled shoot, or sessions you haven’t shared yet. While you don’t have to blog EVERY thing, if you want to share more photography content, this is a great way to do it. Combine a few families’ images for your mini sessions into one post and talk about the day overall. Or, if you photographed a styled shoot that’s not up for publication, share it. As long as whatever you blog is still in your current style of photography and is actually something you want to continue photographing, I say share it!
Share educational or behind-the-scenes content.
Slow season is a great time to add educational content to your blog. Use this time to share about what to wear for your upcoming engagement sessions, highlight your products (albums, especially!) or maybe share some location ideas for sessions or weddings. These posts are super helpful for your clients – and can be worked into your client workflow later on! – and are a great SEO boost. Take the extra time you have in the office to put together a great list blog. It’s totally worth it!
Create a recap post.
Slow season for photographer generally coincides with the end of the year. This is a wonderful time to do a recap blog post! Pick your favorite images from your weddings, engagements, or family sessions and put together a post. You can do one post for each “type” of photography you offer. That’s easily anywhere from 2-5 posts! This is also a great way to thank your clients and talk about your goals/achievements from last year – or for next year.
Bonus Tip: If you plan to create end of year posts like this, create a folder on your computer for each type. As you edit and send out galleries, pull those images throughout the year and drop them in the folder. When you go to prep this blog, you won’t have to search for your favorites!
There’s three great ways to fill your blogging calendar when you aren’t photographing sessions regularly. This is also great to use for extended leaves or holidays, too. Blog posts should be optimized to help you and should be a topic that’s beneficial to your clients in one way or another. Keep that in mind as you design topics on your Trello board! Remember, blogging is about being consistent – but if you need to drop your schedule to fewer posts a month too, that’s okay. I hope these ideas help you feel more confident about blogging during your slow season!
