What Makes a Good Virtual Assistant

Business Tips

July 19, 2021

Good virtual assistants can be hard to come by. A great VA should fit seamlessly into your team and your business. Their job is all about making your life easier and I’ve come to realize there’s a few key traits any good virtual assistant should have! If you’re thinking about becoming a virtual assistant or looking to hire one, here’s a few personality traits you should be looking for (or working on!).

What Makes a Good Virtual Assistant: traits for successful VAs shared by virtual assistant Kristina Dowler of Dot the I's Outsourcing.

A good communicator.

Virtual assistants should be making your life easier – not asking you to chase them down for updates or with questions. They should have a reasonable response time on any and all platforms that you use to communicate. And they should offer updates regularly. This may be in the form of workflows and checklists or actual written updates.

Detail-oriented.

Because of the type of work virtual assistants usually do, being detail-oriented is key. They’re often responsible for admin work, writing, and other tasks that require focus. Being a good virtual assistant means you’re aware of the details and are mindful of all of the work in front of you. Again, the goal is to save time and energy. So if you’re having to redo work or find corrections in everything, that’s not really a great fit. (I’m not saying a VA will never make a mistake, but it shouldn’t be non-stop!).

Takes feedback well.

Part of being a virtual assistant is expecting and taking feedback well. Clients are going to want adjustments so  listening is important. Especially when you’re first onboarding, feedback is crucial to making sure tasks are done the way your client wants. If taking criticism is hard for you, being a VA might not be the best fit. And, if your VA isn’t taking feedback well, making adjustments, or corrections moving forward… might be time to think about if they’re the best fit for you!

A self-starter.

No one expects a VA to know how to do everything in the world. But, it’s pretty common to expect that your VA should know how to use Google! I can’t tell you the number of things I’ve learned because of Google. I try to find the answer before I ever bother my clients because my job is to make their life EASIER. If they’re constantly stopping to help me, fix what I’ve done, or explain more stuff, I’m not really doing that. I always encourage VAs to make sure they spend time training with their clients on expectations, preferences, and any tasks they’re unsure about. But… being a self-starter who can go find out how to do XYZ is important.

Finding a good fit for your business is so important! Look for a VA who has the personality traits you need and that match with your business can change the entire game. While there truly is no “exact formula” to make the perfect VA, I truly believe these traits are part of what makes a good virtual assistant.

And if you’re looking to become a VA, these traits will help you succeed in the business in the long term. And don’t forget, if you want to become a VA, I offer 1:1 coaching to help you where you are NOW in your business!! Even if you’ve barely begun.
