The fall is such a gorgeous time to have portraits with your sweetheart done – the colors just make everyone smile and there’s no better excuse to cozy up than a slight chill in the air. Whether you’re dating, engaged, celebrating your anniversary or just realized your pictures are all selfies, having a portrait session together is a great way to celebrate your relationship! One of the things I’ve heard folks say is that sessions become too stressful because you don’t know what’s going to happen or how to prepare! One of the easiest ways to prepare is to pick out some outfits you love and bring them with you – and here’s a few tips to make the outfits you choose allow me to focus the images on your love story (and maybe not the bright purple sweater you picked out!).
Tip #1: Aim for light colors. Any time of year but especially the fall, light colors will bring the attention to you and your sweetheart instead of making you both look like you belong in the woods! You want to stand out from your background. I suggest whites, greys and even light/pastel colors like blues, greens and pinks. Try to avoid really bright colors! And remember – you don’t have to wear the same color… complimentary is best!
Tip #2: If you want to wear an outfit with a tame pattern – think florals or soft polka dots – your significant other should be wearing something solid. If they decide they want to wear a light patterned shirt, make sure you’re wearing something solid instead. This helps the photograph from looking too busy!
Tip #3: I suggest bringing a change of clothes! Come in a more formal or dressy outfit – yes, I mean the dress you love, the heels (boots for the fall!) and a buttoned up shirt for your significant other. But also bring something more comfortable! Jeans, solid t-shirts or sweaters are perfect for a second option. This makes sure that you feel like yourself in your images and gives us more of a variety in the session!
No matter what you wear, make sure you love the outfits. I don’t recommend running out and buying a dress the night before – although, I’ll admit – I’ve done that! Find something that you feel like yourself in. Your session should reflect who you are together and if you’re in some itchy, too tight or baggy outfit – you won’t feel like yourself and it’ll show. Trust me.
If you need help picking outfits, send me a note – I can help you decide! In fact, I’d love to help you!! At the end of the day, know that no matter what, we will capture your love story – I just want you to be as comfortable as possible when we do!
xoxo
