Being a small business owner is one of the greatest journeys we’ve ever been on. It’s full of so many great moments and achievements, but we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t lonely sometimes. And if we said we were motivated every single day to get up and work. But, discipline is what makes a great business owner. One thing that has been a game changer for me (and Brittany, my co-owner) is co-working over a Zoom call whenever we can. Co-working has helped our productivity AND mental health, and is now a regular part of our week! It’s always an amazing experience! We wanted to share this idea with other business owners in hopes that it will help you on the days you’re struggling a little bit (because seriously, we get it).
What is Co-working?
Well, we co-work virtually because we’re in two different states (boo!). But, it’s the same idea as if you were to go into a physical shared co-working space somewhere. You can sit near others working, interact as appropriate, but mostly just use each other as motivation to keep going and stay on task. We’ve found that when we jump on a Zoom call together, we’re more likely to focus on what we need to do instead of surfing around on our phone or staring out the window. There’s accountability when you show up with someone else. These calls can be anywhere from 40 quick minutes to 2-3 hours, depending on what we need and the time that we have available.
For us, there’s really no set parameters. These calls remind us that we’re not alone. It’s also nice to have a little break every once in a while to chat for a minute or two, just like you would in the workplace! Then we can jump back into work. Every time we hop off a coworking call, we immediately begin sending texts about how productive it felt!
As small business owners who are working constantly every day, this little motivation can be HUGE for productivity. It can be isolating, working at home with just you and the dog or the kids. Sitting near someone (or at least as near as you can get on a screen) is really powerful. There’s a reason people like office work! C0-working is also a great time to chat about a problem or work through a solution for something. Remember not to spend ALL of your time doing that – we are here to work – but, it can be a great way to break a roadblock, too.
Whether you have a team or just a business bestie, consider planning a co-working hour once a week or twice a month. You may be surprised to find that little bit of accountability is powerful for you and your to-do list!
