The Perfect Excuse to Drink Wine at the Holidays
The holidays are the perfect excuse – I mean time – to create beautiful drinks full of holiday spirit. Otherwise known as: the perfect time to heat up wine and throw some cinnamon and other holiday flavors into it. And by that, I mean we’re making MULLED WINE on the blog today, people! Danielle and I are slowly working through our arsenal of wine-related recipes and since holiday parties are right around the corner (seriously can’t believe that), we thought it was a good time to share an easy and delicious holiday drink you can impress all your wine-loving guests with this Christmas season!
So Danielle gave me this mulling spice mix last year for my birthday. Mulling spice is really a combination of cloves, allspice and cinnamon which you can find for sale, pre mixed, online with a quick google search (praise the internet!). We weren’t sure how this recipe would go because we’ve always had mulled wine pre-made for us at wineries or using a powdered mix so this was a fun chance to try our hand at this! It turned out to be super easy so we wanted to share our experience + recipe with you!
Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon of mulling spice, 1 Cheesecloth square, Twine, 2 Tablespoons of honey or sugar (you’ll probably want more actually!), zest and juice of 1 orange and 1 bottle of red wine (or a quart of apple cider for a non-alcoholic drink!). We used Merlot + Sangiovese I had open on my counter… (Whoops! It was delicious anyway).
Step 1: Take the tablespoon of mix and place it in the center of the cheesecloth square. Gather the square at the corner and tie the mixture closed with the twine.
Step 2: In a large saucepan (or dutch oven), combine the cheesecloth, honey or sugar and orange juice and zest together with the bottle of wine (or apple cider). We also tossed some extra cinnamon sticks into ours! (Note: I was going to show you a picture of it in the pot but it looks kinda of weird in the picture…).
Step 3: Heat mixture until just steaming – but NOT boiling, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
Step 4: Enjoy while warm!
Mulled wine is SO easy and a great way to enjoy your wine over the holidays! We want to hear what you think about it when you make your version!
Cheers + Happy holidays!
